Ålesund to Åndalsnes - Norway (Day 3)
From Alesund, it was a
short drive to get to the Rampestreken Starting point for the hike to Romsdalvegen
viewpoint.
We had some quick bite to eat before starting to hike. The
instructions/map at the trailhead was not so clear. So, we decided to check
with couple of people who appeared to be relaxing after the hike, at the
trailhead. They mentioned that it was probably less than 2 hr hike to the
viewpoint on the top, which we took as gospel to proceed ahead.
Right from the
beginning, the steepness of the path should have given us some hint. But we
kept convincing ourselves that the steep angle will reduce as we go along. We
met some folks on the way who had biked their way down the Trollstigen road
earlier that day, which gave further impetus that it mustn’t be that bad for
us.
As we went along, a few folks quit their hike and headed back, while many
went past us at what appeared to be a sprint from our point of view.
The
weather was great that one would not have a better day to climb. Eventually, it
turned out to be one of the steepest hikes we ever did. Towards the end, one
literally had to use all four limbs to get to the final overhanging bridge that
provided for an amazing view that made it all worth it.
Going to the edge of
the overhanging bridge is probably not for anyone with a faint heart! I
couldn’t hold the phone steadily to get a quick video!!
Just before getting to
that bridge, one can taste the fresh water that is piped down from melting ice
for drinking purposes. It tasted amazingly (maybe because of the hike!).
By the
time we were done with the hike and reached the Trollstigen Resort, we were
completely wiped. The resort is a bunch of individual cabins located in a
serene meadow surrounded by tall mountains on one side and a stream on the
other side.
