Colorful Adirondacks!

This past weekend would have turned out to be a total bummer if not for the day trip into Adirondacks... It was supposed to be a muggy and rainy weekend, clearing up later on Sunday. So, our expectations to take the trip to Adirondacks for fall colors fizzled out on saturday... Later in the day, sun came out and we decided come what may, we are driving first thing in the morning on sunday to Adirondacks... This time we decided to go west from the southern tip of Adirondacks at Warrensburg and go through Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and take the Rt 73 back to get on I-87, so that we could make a good loop inside the park. Immediately after we took the exit, we had to go through the town of Warrensburg where they, apparently, had a huge fair/garage sale! It was really huge - that lasted about 3 miles across the town!

After we got out of the town and entered the park, it was a totally different kind of beauty with sun playing hide and seek with rain! The brightness of the colors varied from region to region and it was so amazing to drive through the serenity in a totally sparse traffic towards Tupper Lake, NY. It was gorgeous to see a foggy atmosphere with colors sometimes hiding behind the fog...

We decided to find the supposedly scenic spot Mt Arab Fire Tower and have our packed lunch of lemon rice and curd rice there.. We reached Mt. Arab and kept on driving for more than few miles from the sign that read 'Dead End', but to nowhere! So, eventually, we stopped at a spot that looked like a trailhead, but apparently, it was a long hike up the summit. So, we just parked the car and gobbled our delicious lunch. Then, continued even further into another wilderness on a road that was supposed to have a 'Dead End' which was nowhere to be found... Took a U-turn and drove our way to Whiteface Mountain through Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

We had already visited Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain last year (interestingly on this same weekend of Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain) and so we decided to drive past and go straight to Whiteface Mountain. Unfortunately, we had the same weather pattern this time too - dark clouds hovering over the summit that. We were hoping to go up the gondola to take a view of Lake Placid on a clear day (?!). We weren't that lucky!

After this, we took the road back to I-87 through Rt. 73 and headed back home.....

Back home after a nice, relaxing outing, in time for dinner!

Blue Mountain Lake - Central Adirondacks

Our agenda was to get to Blue Mountain Lake and do the small hike up to the Castle Rock Summit to get a view of the Blue Mountain Lake. The drive from our house through the foothills of Adirondacks didn’t show that the fall colors had peaked, but once we went past Warrensburg and the elevation started to increase, we could see colors changing gradually. Gore Mountain had spectacular views, but past that were colors even more gorgeous and vibrant! Further on the way, we passed a few lakes with spectacular foliage in the foreground and background - Adirondack Lake, Lake Durant and Lake Abanakee dam. Okay, the hike was only for about ~1.5miles one-way. We didn’t really pay attention to the height or the elevation (2430’) that we had to climb across that ‘short’ hike. Boy, did we underestimate! Up until about 0.8-0.9 miles, the steepness was okay, and the trail split into two - one going to the Castle Rock Summit and another one leading to the shore of Blue Mountain Look. We ...

Italy (March 2025)

Our week in Italy flew past like a dream! Plenty travel videos showed crowded places but even in the crowds, the charm of Italy is not lost. Alberobello and Matera offered unique characters in the quieter corners of Puglia region along the Adriatic Sea. A short day-trip from Rome to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast was worth visiting as a teaser for another trip. Rome and Vatican with its history needed more than 2 days we were able to spend. Wandering the ancient maze of Matera From the Bari Airport, the drive to Matera started with a drenching rain in some areas along the way. Just the week before, we read about Matera getting flooded by torrential rains. So, we kept our fingers crossed about our sojourn at Matera and didn’t have much hopes. As we drove closer to Matera the glistening rays of sun peeking from the clouds gave us some hope! The Fra I Sassi Residence hotel is in a ‘ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato)’ zone where only cars with certain permits can enter. It is to...
